About DC Candlelighters
DC Candlelighters is a local affiliate of the American Childhood Cancer Organization. The ACCO has over 100,000 families in their network and growing with 40 affiliate groups across the county. DC Candlelighters began in 1970 by 25 parents who met in the halls of Children’s National Medical Center to offer each other support during their child’s cancer treatment. DC Candlelighters is a registered 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, supported by the private donations of foundations, corporations, small businesses, individuals and our activities. Our all-volunteer Board of Directors consists of parents who have had a child with cancer and professionals who have worked with families who experienced childhood cancer. Our children are warriors, survivors and angels. The Board works in collaboration with other pediatric non-profits and clinical professionals to best serve the needs of those in our care.
In 2025, DC Candlelighters has provided 64 families with financial support that help pay rent/mortgage, cover medical/pharmacy expenses, or even gas to get to/from the treatment centers. DC Candlelighters also provided 8 families with funeral expenses and bereavement support including comfort and caring Bereavement Baskets. Finally, DC Candlelighters supports families by providing social activities like our monthly Hospital Visits, Family Spa Night, Rachel's Royal Tea Party, Bingo Events, Video Game Nights, Family Fun Day, Fall Festival on the Farm, Halloween Party, and our December Holiday Party.
Be a hero by helping us continue to make these things happen for our littlest warriors and their families. Unfortunately, the incidence of childhood cancer is on the rise. We need your help now more than ever.
